Here’s to the ones who dream / foolish as they may seem / here’s to the hearts that ache / here’s to the mess we make. – Mia in La La Land
C. S. Lewis once wrote, “Being in love is a good thing, but it is not the best thing.” Hollywood seems to take a different stance on this though. On-screen love stories bring us dramatic clichés: happily-ever-afters, grand gestures that save the day, and sobbing protagonists railing against whatever tragic external obstacle drove them apart. Enter Damien Chazelle’s 2016 musical homage to love, youth, and Los Angeles. This award winning story turns many of these narrative devices on their heads, and instead gives us one of contrasts: of audacious hopes and bittersweet loves; of blue-tinged joys and besetting realism. It’s a shot of optimism dosed with realism. And along the way, it asks big questions about pursuing our dreams (calling), and the true nature of love and sacrifice.
